The building was built by two carpenters, Richard Sexton and Robert Lincoln, between 1817 and 1820 and included a brewery and stables. The garage next door housed the original brewery. Sexton was the first recorded licensee in 1830 and he was there until 1851. Since 1994 the pub has been run by Mike Lorenz and Stephen Fiske.
